This Great Barrier Island accommodation is built on a hill side. Its elevation ensures northern, eastern and western views over the settlement of Oruawharo Medlands and the ocean beyond. Unlike most other Medlands accommodations, from here, you’ll see the sun rise over the ocean from your bedroom in the morning and set over the hills in the east at night.

And at night there are the stars of the island’s Dark Sky Sanctuary. The sky here is certified magnificent – a delight for astronomers and stargazers. So make sure to watch the Milky Way rise over the hill behind the house. Or from the front deck, watch Orion cartwheel through the summer sky, or Scorpius’ slow crawl in winter. And if you would like to be guided through this be dazzlingly starry sky,  Good Heavens Dark Sky Experiences take place a short 10 minute walk away, in the dunes along Sandhills Road.

XSPOT Medlands is a compact Great Barrier Island beach house at its best. Its long term island resident owners have set it up for easy beach- and off-grid living. This means that energy needs are met by solar power captured by solar panels on the roof and stored in batteries under the house.

Rainwater is caught on the roof

Water is caught off the roof, stored in large tanks below the house and pumped to a smaller water tank behind the house. It’s heated by solar power or the wetback wood stove. And if all else fails, a small gas powered water heater will give the water temperature a boost. Basically, XSPOT Beach House is modern sustainable off grid holidaying impersonated.

The views to the beach and the ocean beyond can be enjoyed from two queen bedrooms with a bathroom each. These sleeping areas are separated by a kitchen-lounge area. Sliding doors provide access to the decks – sunny in front, more shady at the back. The can be left open to allow for a cooling sea breeze in summer.

The house was designed to be perfect for a holiday with your loved one, friends or kids. For longer stays, there is excellent Starlink internet access and a laundry with a washing machine for your cold washes.

Close to Claris and Tryphena, the walking track and the stars

Claris, home to the airfield, Claris Store and eateries is a ten minute drive, shuttle or hitch hike away from this Great Barrier Island beach house. Similarly, the shops and cafes of Tryphena are a ten minute drive in the other direction. And closer still, there is the Aotea Brewery just down the road, open weekend afternoons throughout summer, with snacks provided, too. the Kowhai – Station Rock loop walk is right out the front for avid trampers. The XSPOT Beach House is also centrally located for access to the Aotea Track and the plethora of other island walks.
