It’s a great place if you like the ocean, 270 degree views and stargazing. You can watch the gannets fly past the windows from the sofa! And you may even spot some dolphins, whales or a manta ray from this cliff top location.

Bring your own 4WD on the Sealink ferry, or rent one locally. You will access XSPOT Cliff over unsealed roads and a steep driveway. Once you get to this apartment on top of the cliff you’ll be able to enjoy sweeping 270 degree panoramic views over New Zealand’s Hauraki Gulf. This Great Barrier Island apartment has an open plan lounge kitchen area, a bedroom with queen size bed, a bathroom, a walk in wardrobe and a little hall way. It’s fully self contained.

Night time views

At night, view the stars of the island’s Dark Sky Sanctuary from this Great Barrier Island apartment. The sky here is certified magnificent – a delight for astronomers and stargazers. So make sure to watch the the Southern Cross and the Magellanic Clouds from the spacious deck. Orion meanwhile cartwheels through the northern summer evening sky, and Scorpius crawls through the sky in winter. XSPOT Cliff House is a spacious Great Barrier Island accommodation at its best. Its long term island resident owners have set it up for easy off-grid living. Solar panels on the roof capture solar power that is stored in batteries in the garage. There is plenty of power to charge phones and laptops and a Starlink satellite connection covers your connectivity needs. Equipment with heating elements, such as hair dryers/straighteners and rice cookers are best left at home.

Water comes from a creek

Drinking water at this Great Barrier Island holiday apartment comes from a spring at the top of our property. It is stored in a water tank uphill for pressure. It’s delicious and triple filtered for drinking from a small tap on the kitchen bench and for bathing, it’s heated by solar power or through the wetback element in the wood stove. Basically, XSPOT Cliff House is modern sustainable off grid holidaying impersonated.

Large windows in the bedroom, kitchen and lounge provide 270 degree sea views. In addition, louvre windows keep things cool in summer, while large sliding doors offer access to the veranda for sunbathing and stargazing. Just of this deck, a fifty meter stroll offers views into the bay hundred meters below. With binoculars you’ll often be able to spot dolphins, whales, seals or even a snapper. On a clear day this vista stretches all the way to the main land and Rangitoto, eighty kilometres away.

XSPOPT is a beautiful Great Barrier Island apartment in a secluded location. The shops and cafes of Tryphena, for instance, are a 20 minute drive away. This is a wonderful route along the coast, into the foothills and skirting picturesque Schooner Bay. On arrival you’ll realise that XSPOT Cliff House is the perfect spot to observe the wild life in the Hauraki Gulf, and to access a plethora of island walks.
